Synopsis While searching for the protagonist of his new film, director Seongpil watches a short acting video by Hee-eun, an aspiring actor. As he gazes into the camera, Hee-eun evokes in Seongpil an inexplicable emotion unlike anything he has felt from other actors. Seongpil invites Hee-eun to his studio, where they conduct an audition and a reading. However, Seongpil begins to obsess over Hee-eun’s expressions themselves rather than her acting. Believing that she is constantly hiding her emotions, he demands something more genuine. Amid repeated readings and shoots, Seongpil begins to see strange distortions in Hee-eun’s face: subtly misaligned expressions, a voice that arrives late, and layers of eyes multiplying one after another. Yet Hee-eun’s face on camera is always an ordinary face with nothing wrong. Increasingly unable to distinguish reality from his own gaze, Seongpil stares at Hee-eun until he reaches a state in which he can no longer read any emotion in other people’s faces. On the final day of filming, the moment he faces Hee-eun beyond the camera, her face slowly collapses before his eyes. A face from which the eyes, nose, and mouth have disappeared. There is no longer any expression left to read.
