Nice to meet you! I’m actor Park Hyun, with an intense passion for learning. People around me often say that, when they first meet me, I seem difficult to approach and hard to become close to, but once they get to know me, I’m the most comfortable and approachable person in the world. I believe the reason I’ve recently been able to play characters ranging from ‘losers’ to cynical and rational characters is that my diverse range of moods is one of my strengths. In terms of personality, one of my strengths is my strong drive. As someone without a specialized background, I have carried out everything I wanted and needed to achieve—including the question, “Do I really have to go this far?” For example, because I did not come from a well-off family, I did what I needed to do to ease the financial burden: I received scholarships for all four years of university. When I decided to pursue acting as a career, I immediately began writing scenarios and filming in order to learn about the set and acting. I produced short films and web dramas as a director, actor, and production staff member, putting “Do I really have to go this far?” into practice as I continued moving forward. (The drama won the grand prize at an awards ceremony—it’s a small source of pride for me!) As I mentioned earlier, I have always worked hard and lived diligently, without putting off the things I wanted or needed to do. That’s why I challenge myself and gain experience in a wide range of fields—whether it’s studying or exercising. But this is where the ‘weakness’ I struggled with appeared. Although I was good at many things, I didn’t have one particular ‘special strength’ that I was overwhelmingly good at. At a time when there were many things I wanted to do but nothing in particular I wanted to pursue during my job search, this led to burnout, and I went through a difficult period. That didn’t last long, though. With the thought, “Then let’s do everything we want to do!”, I spent two years juggling three jobs in business, at a company, and in advertising. Then I realized that acting was what opened my eyes the most and made my heart race, so I gave everything up and began my career as an actor. I am now entering my third year. It is still fun and exciting. In the acting profession, being good at a wide range of things has been a great strength. I’m very happy to be an actor because I can meet many characters—including the sports players, idols, major corporation employees, and married people I had dreamed of playing—and learn about their lives. I still have a lot to learn and many shortcomings. That’s why I’m excited: there is so much I can do and so much more to fill in. Even if it means overcoming embarrassment, I want to continue growing and become an actor who performs well on set.
