[Production Information] ■ Title: Ngoc ■ Format: Short film ■ Genre: Drama ■ Runtime: Approximately 25 minutes *Selected for production support by the Jeonju Film Commission ■ Logline : Le Thi Ngoc, a Vietnamese transfer student, is asked to speak awkwardly, like a Vietnamese person, because she speaks Korean well when she is chosen to participate in an interview for a school promotional video. ■ Director's Statement : Do we truly respect diversity? Korean society is changing into one where diverse cultures coexist, and the value of “respect for diversity” is being emphasized not only in schools but also in various institutions. As a result, the phrase “respect for diversity” has become a very familiar value. However, it is not easy to be certain that these words actually align with our attitudes. Although we say that we are considerate of multicultural families and immigrants, we often view them as unfamiliar rather than as they are, or try to understand them through specific images associated with being “foreign” or “multicultural.” For example, we may assume that someone from Vietnam cannot handle spicy food well or is unfamiliar with Korea. This film reveals such perspectives through everyday situations and the filming of a school promotional video. In order to “show diversity well,” the teacher asks Le Thi Ngoc (Ngoc), a transfer student from Vietnam, to speak in a distinctly Vietnamese manner. Ayun approaches her wanting to become friends, but believing that she already understands Ngoc, she ends up showing clumsy consideration without intending to. In the process, Ngoc begins to be treated not as a student, but as an image of a Vietnamese person. Through this production, we want to show how different the “respect for diversity” we talk about can be from its actual practice. Even as we believe we are being respectful and considerate, we sometimes view others in ways that are easier for us to understand rather than seeing them as they truly are. This work shows how seemingly small words and actions can become ways of defining someone, and captures how a relationship can change in the moment that this is realized. It also seeks to reveal the familiar perspectives and prejudices hidden behind the phrase “respect for diversity,” and to ask: Whom is this respect for diversity really for? Can it even be called respect for diversity?
