Description

Hello, I am director Lee Kang-to. The short film [Repotting] is the starting point of my directing career, and we are currently preparing it with the goal of submitting it to various international film festivals, including Clermont-Ferrand. We are looking for actors who would like to join us in this courageous challenge with the same passion. JI HYANG JI HYANG Our team’s direction, or “JI HYANG,” literally refers to the direction and goals we look toward and pursue together. Coming together with different thoughts and feelings to move toward one dream—that is our starting point. We believe in the potential of Korean cinema and dream of seeing it shine on a broader stage. We formed this team with the hope that Korean cinema can become a current and a voice within the world, while considering a cinematic language that connects naturally with audiences around the globe rather than remaining within Korea. Through imagination that crosses boundaries and sincere stories, we aim to create films that can inspire empathy beyond national borders. We are a team that does not fear challenges or experimentation and moves forward one step at a time. ■ Film Introduction [Repotting] is our first short film intended for submission to film festivals. This film explores one possible direction for dealing with emotions that people have kept buried for a long time. Because scenes in which actors express emotions and evoke empathy are simple yet essential, this film will provide an opportunity to genuinely take on the challenge of emotional expression. It will be a short film that challenges us both as a film director and as actors. ■ Project Introduction This is an independent short film project with the goal of entering major international short film festivals, including festivals in the Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Springs, Odense, and Oberhausen circuits. ■ Synopsis Hui-yeon drives toward a quiet rural area. As she has every time, she has come to plant something. Dong-woo arrives late. Unable to help, he only becomes angry from a distance while holding a sign. Dong-woo strides toward Hui-yeon as she responds without showing any emotion. He passes by the countless signs Hui-yeon has planted, and the sign in his hand bears the words describing her trauma. Dong-woo is waiting with his coworkers for an important call. The call concerns Hui-yeon. Without even looking back, Dong-woo rushes out and heads straight to Hui-yeon’s house. Hui-yeon appears more composed than expected, but Dong-woo immediately senses the emptiness inside her. However, unlike Dong-woo, who wants to hear her story, Hui-yeon keeps her heart closed and refuses to speak... ■ Director’s Intent The film 〈Repotting〉 is a story about how to deal with emotions and about human growth. In an era of overheated competition, when people must constantly promote themselves, the development of information and communication technology and social media imposes a social mask designed to attract public attention—in other words, a “persona.” In this process, negative emotions and trauma increasingly come to be regarded as weaknesses. In a world where inhuman things are gradually becoming commonplace, this film seeks to reflect on how we should face and handle the emotions buried deep within us for the sake of human growth. Because human beings are not perfect, we believe that imperfect ways can sometimes become an escape route and a foundation for growth. In an era when everyone lives with their own trauma, this film will gently suggest that we acknowledge the weaknesses inherent in being human and grow together. ■ Film Objective The goal of this film is to look back on and showcase each person’s strengths. By combining the director’s capabilities with the actors’ charms and acting experiences, we aim to bring forth distinctive characters and stories that only we can create. ■ Acting Direction Objective The characters in this project will be completed through the actors’ artistry. We will incorporate the charms and stories revealed by the actors during auditions into their characters, building new relationships and individuality. Rather than simply making “any role suit you,” the goal is to freely reveal your own individuality and discover your unique acting identity. ■ Character Introduction <Hui-yeon> - A person who buries her emotions far away. She lives quietly, saying she is fine without letting anything show. As a result, everything festers inside until she eventually breaks down. When something happens, she does not tell the people around her. Sadness, hardship, anger—she carefully buries all those seemingly useless emotions. She simply wants to live well. So she tried not to waste energy on unnecessary emotions, but it seems it is too late to turn back. Her illness of the heart is consuming her from within. She lives with a smiling face, but people around her ask every time whether she is all right. <Dong-woo> - Hui-yeon’s friend, lover, or family member. He has quietly watched over her from her side, laughing and spending time with her, but it is becoming difficult to pretend he does not know anymore. It is painfully clear that the emotions she has buried are destroying her. He decides to bear them with her. It will be extremely painful, but he will try to overcome it together with her so that she does not have to be alone. ■ Filming Information Filming will take place over 2 sessions during May. Session 1: Regional location (traveling together or transportation expenses supported) Session 2: Urban location The filming schedule and number of sessions may be subject to partial changes later. ■ Audition Information First Round — Video screening / Free performance (emotional acting) / Individual notice for successful applicants only Second Round — Video screening / Assigned performance (emotional acting) / Individual notice Final — In-person audition / Individual notice ■ How to Apply 1.
